India is grappling with a momentary wave of the pandemic with more than 300,000 new coronavirus cases reported in recent days, and hospitals in several states are recovering from shortages of medical oxygen and beds.

The head of the World Health Organization calls the recent coronavirus outbreak in India “beyond heartbreaking” and says the UN firm has sent must-have materials to the subcontinent, adding thousands of portable oxygen machines that patients breathe.

At a press conference on Monday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the pandemic “continues to intensify” worldwide and that coronavirus infections have now risen for the ninth consecutive week, while deaths have risen for the sixth week in a row.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden, in a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday made an unwavering commitment from his management to the rest of the people of India in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the White House said.

Biden spoke with Modi and promised that the United States and India will largely work together in the fight against COVID-19.

“The President pledged America’s steadfastness for the other people of India who have been affected by the recent surge in COVID-19 cases,” the White House said in a reading of the call.

This is the first call between the two leaders after the fatal wave of COVID19 erupted in India.

Giving a guarantee, the Center said Monday that the country has a good enough stockpile of fuel to save lives and that the population is not frightened by the availability of medical oxygen.

Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, the deputy secretary of the Home Ministry, Piyush Goyal, highlighted the efforts made by the government to supply oxygen to hospitals in areas where COVID-19 cases are the highest as soon as possible.
