India protests with Pakistan conversion of gurdwara into mosque

India said Monday that it had lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over reports that others were looking to turn a historic gurdwara in the eastern city of Lahore into a mosque.

The gurdwara is a historical shrine built on the site where Bhai Taru Singh suffered fatal injuries in 1745.

“The gurdwara is a position of reverence and is considered sacred through the Sikh network. This incident was considered with a wonderful fear in India. There have been calls to justice for the Sikh minority network in Pakistan,” Srivastava said.

“India has expressed its considerations in the most powerful terms about this incident and has called on Pakistan to investigate the matter and take immediate corrective action,” he added.

It was the most recent in a series of protests in India opposed to the remedy of Pakistani minorities, namely Hindus and Sikhs.
