India: Growing interest in Oerlikon Barmag’s commercial spinning systems: technical textiles on the rise

REMSCHEID, Germany – August 8, 2024 – As a classic textile country, India has also established a strong position in the man-made fiber production sector in recent decades. The West Asian country now has the second largest polyester yarn manufacturer in the world. The Indian textile industry covers the entire price chain, from cast iron to the finished textile product.

The technical textiles sector is particularly considered to be the market of the future. With an average expansion rate of 12% since 2013, this dynamic sector accounts for about 13% of India’s entire textile and apparel market, according to the government organization Invest India. The volume of the market has almost doubled in the last ten years. In India, the production of commercial yarns is largely based on polyamide. Oerlikon Barmag has a strong market position here. ” In recent years we have put plants into operation for many customers,” said Dr. Wolfgang Ernst, Head of Sales at Oerlikon’s Artificial Fibre Solutions Division.

Growing Demand for Industrial Polyester Yarns

The structural boom and increasing use of geotextiles and commercial textiles in infrastructure projects, as well as in agriculture and aquaculture, show enormous potential for expansion. This is supported by the government’s trade progression programme for 2021, which includes technical textiles among the ten priority sectors. The program is based on reducing dependence on imports. Until now, a large part of the textiles and technical threads that were needed throughout the country were imported.

The trend towards high-quality technical textiles for the domestic market has also been observed through the device and plant manufacturer from Remscheid. “We are receiving more and more requests from Indian consumers for spinning systems for commercial yarns,” says Dr. Ernst. “What’s new is the wonderful interest shown by corporations in downstream processes that seek upstream integration. We attribute this to stricter regulations from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Until now, commercial threads were mainly imported from China. To ensure the quality of processed yarns, the government has been strictly regulating them since last year. Therefore, it makes sense for Indian textile manufacturers to venture into the business of yarn production. This progression was also evident at this year’s Techtextil Frankfurt fair, where Oerlikon Barmag experts were able to conduct a disproportionate number of technical discussions with Indian consumers and stakeholders.

Oerlikon Barmag’s commercial yarn generation offers an extended finishing procedure window, without compromising the quality of the yarn. Flexible spinning concepts enable a variety of imaginable spun products for many applications. The portfolio includes procedures for the production of polyamide and polyester yarns with the necessary physical facilities for a wide variety of finishing applications. Whether HMLS yarns for automotive tires, yarns for geotextiles, seat belts or even airbags, yarn manufacturers will find a customized concept for every finishing application at the Remscheid solution provider.
