India has seen an increase of 187 COVID-19 cases in a single day, while the number of active cases of infection has decreased to 1,381, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.
According to ministry data updated at 8 a. m. , three deaths were recorded in 24 hours, one in Maharashtra, one in Chhattisgarh and one in Uttar Pradesh.
The number of cases had fallen to double digits as of Dec. 5, but cases began to rise after the emergence of a new variant and cold weather.
After December 5, a maximum of a single-day rise of 841 new cases were reported on December 31, 2023 which is 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, official sources said.
Of all active cases, a large majority (about 92%) through home isolation.
“The latest available data suggest that the JN. 1 subvariant does not lead to an exponential increase in new cases or an increase in hospitalizations and mortality,” the official source said.
India has experienced three waves of Covid-19 in the past, with the peak of daily new cases and deaths reported in the delta wave from April to June 2021.
At its peak, 414,188 new deaths and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021.
Since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, more than 4. 5 million people have been infected and more than 5. 3 million deaths in about four years nationwide.
The number of people cured of the disease stands at more than 4. 4 million, with a national recovery rate of 98. 81 percent, according to the ministry’s website.
According to the website, 220. 67 million rupees of Covid vaccine doses have been administered in the country.
