In Peru, thirteen killed in illegal stampede in nightclub

Thirteen other people were killed in a stampede while trying to flee an illegal nightclub in Peru attacked by police on Saturday night, authorities said.

There were about 120 other people at Thomas Restobar nightclub in Los Olivos, north of Lima, when police arrived at the site.

Neighbors had alerted police to the incident.

The revelers, upon the arrival of the police, rushed to escape through a singles gate, according to an official of the Ministry of the Interior of Peru.

No tear weapons or weapons were fired.

In addition to the thirteen dead in the stampede, six other people were injured, as well as three police officers who were looking at those trapped inside.

Police arrested at least 23 other people in connection with the incident, the internal ministry said.

Mass concentrations are illegal lately in Peru, which is in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The order is in effect until the end of the month.
