The rate of auto theft has reached an all-time high over the past year, but drivers can reduce their chances of becoming victims depending on the type of car they drive, according to an industry group.
The Honda CR-V SUV is the most stolen vehicle in Canada for the second year in a row, according to the Equity Association, a nonprofit organization that aims to eradicate insurance crime in the insurance industry. damage. Rounding out the smarter trio are the 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and the 2020 Ford F150 pickup truck.
Meanwhile, the three vehicles least likely to be stolen are the Chevrolet Volt, Kia Nino SDR, and Cadillac XTS.
Car thefts hit new highs in 2022, rising to 48 per cent in Ontario and 50 per cent in Quebec over the past year, the Equity Association said. Thefts also increased in Alberta, up 18. 3 per cent, and in Atlantic Canada. to 34. 5 consistent with last year’s cent.
Record theft rates have also led to record insurance claims, with the industry paying out $1. 2 billion in claims last year, according to the settlement.
This challenge is unlikely to emerge anytime soon, as organized crime makes Canada a top destination for auto theft and criminals continue to use profits to fund drug trafficking and terrorism, according to Equity.
“Our nation’s auto theft challenge is getting worse,” Bryan Gast, the association’s vice president of investigative services, said in a statement. “Organized crime continues to view Canada as a country of origin for stolen vehicles, where monetary praise is at an all-time high and the threat of prosecution is low.
Still, drivers can take steps to prevent theft, and knowing which cars are the primary target can prove helpful, especially for other people to buy a new vehicle. Homeowners can also reduce the risk of theft by ensuring that their car doors remain closed and with the windows closed, investing in alarms or other anti-theft systems, such as guide wheel locks, or installing a tracking device.
Equity is calling on the auto industry, government, and law enforcement to work together to prevent theft. “Canadians look forward to seeing a collaborative strategy to address this pressing and ongoing national auto theft crisis,” said Terri O’Brien, Executive Director of the Equity Association.

US inflation generally slowed in October, an encouraging sign of progress for the US Federal Reserve in its long quest to control price pressures.
The core consumer value index, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0. 2 percent from September, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed on Tuesday. Economists prefer the core indicator as an indicator of core inflation to the headline CPI. This measure has remained stalled, held back by the value of gasoline.
House prices, which account for about a third of the overall CPI, rose 0. 3 percent, part of last month’s pace. Economists see sustained moderation in this category as key to bringing core inflation back to the Fed’s target. A key measure of hotel rents continues to fall.
Excluding housing and energy, costs rose 0. 2% from September and 3. 7% from a year earlier (the lowest level in just two years), according to Bloomberg calculations.
