A man in the United States was reportedly inflamed with Covid-19 and Monkeypox. Mitcho Thompson, a California resident, tested positive for the coronavirus virus in late June. Thompson told NBC that the dual viruses made the patient feel like he had a severe case of the flu. He also had a fever, shortness of breath, chills, body aches and skin lesions, according to reports.
Yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a physical emergency following the Monkeypox outbreak.
“I have that the global outbreak of monkeypox represents a public health emergency of foreign interest,” WHO leader Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference.
He said a committee of experts that met Thursday could not reach a consensus, so it was up to him to make the decision to cause the highest alert imaginable.
“The WHO assessment is that the threat of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions of Europe where we assess the threat as high,” he added.
Monkeypox has affected more than 16,800 people in 74 countries, according to a tally by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published on July 22.
An increase in monkeypox infections has been reported since early May outdoors in West and Central African countries where the disease has long been endemic.
Overall, 98% of those inflamed were gay or bisexual men, and about a third were known to have visited on-site sex spots, such as sex parties or saunas, in the past month.
Tedros has in the past expressed fears that stigma and scapegoating will make the outbreak harder to trace.
On Saturday, he said the outbreak was “concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those who have sexual partners,” meaning it “can be stopped with the right methods in the right groups. “
He suggested that all countries “work hard with communities of men who have sex with men, design and provide effective data and services, and take measures that protect” affected communities.
