Brazil has 57 million active volunteers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, about 47% of them have started new activities, despite social distancing. The figures can be found in Pesquisa Voluntariado no Brasil 2021 (“Volunteer Survey in Brazil 2021”), through Datafolha Instituto. Building a network to unite those who collaborate and those who want help is one of the objectives of the national volunteer incentive program, also known as Pátria Voluntária (“Voluntary Nation”).
“If your neighbor or a network near you wants assistance but you can’t offer it on your own, we can effectively provide you through the program. We can close this gap, which is why the initiative is so vital,” Pollyana Andrade, executive secretary of the initiative, said in an interview for Brasil em Pauta, on TV Brasil, which is a component of the country’s public broadcasting network.
The initiative was launched in 2019 and aims to inspire Brazilians to participate in volunteer activities, especially to gain advantages from other people in situations of social vulnerability. In an articulated way, the program seeks that the government, the personal sector and organizations participate to act to the maximum of those in need.
During the meeting, the Secretary pointed out that Pátria Voluntária is based on the pillars: accessibility, volunteering, social commitment, social transformation and humanitarian aid.
“We paint with volunteer paintings and humanitarian aid whenever the country faces a crisis or emergency. Pátria Voluntária also partners with state and municipal ministries and agencies. Our contribution is to attach donations to those who want them. We paint with social transformation Our social projects are active throughout the country. On the front of social participation, we have our campaigns, there are solidarity Christmases, several campaigns a year and some express ones that we deploy according to needs,” he said.
In 2018, Brazil’s official statistics firm, IBGE, reported that around 6. 5 million more people were volunteering in the country at the time, which is particularly lower than the survey figure released by Datafolha this year.
“The pandemic landscape has brought a lot of learning. Collaboration, dedicating time to someone, was evident during the pandemic, when many other people were isolated. You had to spend time helping your neighbor, helping elderly people who couldn’t leave their homes or couldn’t afford medicine. Simple tasks. This encouraged others to act in solidarity,” said the Executive Secretary. “They are small and undeniable things, but they were enough for this to replace other people. He continued, noticing that.
