The number of female combatants in the infantry increased by 350% between 2013 and 2017
The IDF will recruit female recruits from several prestigious ensembles that in the past were closed to women, the army said Saturday.
Female recruits will participate in special evaluations that will allow them to serve in fighting positions starting in November. Evaluations come with a physical variety procedure that comes with aptitude tests for fighting.
These roles come with positions within the 669th Airborne Combat Evacuation and Rescue Unit, for the U. S. Air Force Pararescue. The U. S. military and combat engineering unit Yahalom.
The first recruitment date for the Yahalom unit is March 2023. Unit 669 has a recruitment date consistent with the year.
Those who pass the screenings can apply for other fighting roles.
The army also plans to allow recruits to serve as drivers of infantry brigades.
Following the request of 4 female recruits in 2020, an army committee was formed to assess the integration of women into combat roles in the army.
The committee found that there were likely dozens of potential recruits who met the criteria for express roles.
Women hold many positions in the IDF and in the first combined infantry unit, Caracal, established in 2004.
According to Israeli army statistics, the number of female infantry fighters exceeded 350 between 2013 and 2017.
