ICE Launches ‘Dismantlement’ Operation in Guatemala to Catch Corrupt Smugglers, Rescue Migrants

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced this week that a major operation in Guatemala had led to a series of arrests and rescues of migrants who had been smuggled through transnational criminal organizations. ICE said its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) department led the action in Guatemala with local authorities, executing 20 arrest warrants and 54 search warrants in 3 parts of the country. The operation resulted in the arrest of two dozen Guatemalans for human trafficking, as well as the seizure of more than $150,000 and other contraband. ICE also said it illegally rescued 70 immigrants in the country from Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Venezuela from various hotels in Guatemala City. “The enforcement moves we are taking to oppose vicious smuggling organizations that prey on other vulnerable people are unprecedented in scope and scale,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “This takedown through our Homeland Security investigations is a stark example of the thousands of moves we have taken to date. Our efforts are being carried out in partnership with other departments of the federal government and, more importantly, through the creation of greater collaboration with our foreign partners as well. REPUBLICANS OF LA MAISON DE LA PATRIE DEMAND ANSWERS FROM CBP AND ICE ON ALLEGED FAILURES IN PROCESSING MIGRANTS Of the other 24 people arrested, seven were Guatemalan police officers who ICE says facilitated smuggling and were investigated through the police unit. internal affairs of the Guatemalan police. the perpetrators to justice. ” HSI, which is independent of ICE’s enforcement and removal operations, had introduced a similar operation. re last year in Guatemalan smuggling networks. This operation revealed a series of networks operating in various hotels. There were more than 2. 3 million encounters with migrants on the southern border last year, and much of that is facilitated through criminal organizations and cartels operating on the border and throughout Central America. The Biden administration has adopted a border technique that targets the “root causes” of migration in the hemisphere. Part of that strategy is to crack down on human trafficking and she has continuously touted an anti-trafficking operation this year that has resulted in thousands of arrests and the dismantling of more than 5,000 trafficking operations. The Operation ICE announcement comes just weeks after Biden’s management announced increased cooperation with Mexico on migration. The large-scale border crossing will see more checkpoints, collaboration between countries in terms of people-smuggling operations, and a buildup of resources and personnel. Officials said the crusade would also see more sharing of data between the two countries about how transnational criminal organizations use stash places and pick-up locations and send migrants through Mexico and into the United States. nationals, whose number has increased dramatically in recent months but who had not been deported in the past under Trump-era orders due to Mexico’s refusal to receive them.
