Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said the medical material would help bolster China’s efforts against the coronavirus outbreak, which has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization. The plane was carrying medical supplies, as well as masks, gloves and other emergency medical equipment.

“Today’s aid is also a sign of the Indian people’s friendship and solidarity with the Chinese people, as the two countries also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the status quo of diplomatic relations this year,” the MEA said in a statement.

After being quarantined for more than 23 days in Japan, all members of the Indian team and passengers aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship boarded an Air India flight, sent through India on Wednesday. Passengers and equipment will be taken to Delhi first.

A total of 138 Indians, 132 crew members and 6 passengers were among the 3,711 people on board the ship when it docked in the port of Yokohama, near Tokyo, on Feb. 3. It was quarantined after a passenger disembarked last month in Hong Kong. Kong was found to be suffering from the disease. The ship is home to the largest cluster of COVID-19 cases outside of China. Two former passengers on the ship were also reportedly killed.

The novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has killed more than 2,744 people in mainland China, according to the National Health Commission, and inflamed more than 81,000 people since December 2019.

The virus originated at a seafood market in the city of Wuhan, where animals were illegally traded. China’s Hubei province has been the hardest hit by the contagious disease, which is also the epicenter of the virus.
