Note: As of April 6, if you are eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) and have not yet implemented it, you have not yet implemented the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). Regular employment insurance and health benefits have now been merged with the CERB system.
The coronavirus pandemic has created the largest mass layoff we’ve ever noticed in Canada. Approximately 1 million IS claims have been filed in the following week and a portion and $4 million are expected to apply to the new Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) announced Wednesday when available.
If you have been fired recently or are worried about being fired, there are many things to follow. One resolution is whether to request THE ER or CERB, a hard-to-take resolution now because the federal government is inundated with requests, with reports of long queues in Service Canada buildings.
Here are the questions you want to ask yourself and what to stay in your brain to help you determine what your most productive shot is.
What are IS and CERB?
Employment insurance is canada’s federal unemployment insurance program that provides transitional monetary assistance. Eligible individuals are paid every two weeks for up to 55% of their insured earnings during the following year, with a cap of $2,292 depending on the month. Benefits begin the week after their last day of painting (there is a one-week wait consistent with the period) and continues up to forty-five weeks in total.
CERB is the new emergency coronavirus that gains benefits for others who are not eligible for IS or who prefer this option. You can’t apply until the government’s online page is in place, which, hopefully, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be on April 6. 4 months. Payments are expected to begin 10 days after submitting your application, which means applicants will not be paid until at least April 16.
Are you eligible for IS?
You will most likely be eligible for IS if you have contributed to the IS program, have been without paintings for at least seven consecutive days, and painted the minimum number of hours (between 420 and 700, depending on where you live). You can see all the main points here.
Are you eligible for CERB?
The emergency gains advantages from the coronavirus that is intended for whose paints are affected by COVID-19. If you’ve been fired, you’re in poor health, you’re quarantined, you’re worried about a user in poor health at COVID-19, or if you’re a running parent and have to stay home unpaid to care for young people in poor health or at home because school or day care is closed. CERB is designed for others who are not yet EI eligible and who want assistance, adding part-time, on-demand staff, and freelancers.
If you are still applying but have no cash due to COVID-19 interruptions, you may be eligible for CERB.
How do you win?
If you are eligible for IE and CERB, one of the main considerations is the one that will allow you to get the most money. Depends on how much you earn. Because IS will pay up to 55% of your income, with a limit of $573 depending on the week, this is the ultimate productive selection for you if you earn more than $54,200 a year before tax.
According to Hilary Page, a labor attorney at Toronto’s SpringLaw law firm, CERB is the most productive selection for low-income people. For example, if you earn $30,000 a year under CERB, you’ll get $500 consistent with the week, which is more than the $317 you would get from IS. “For low-income people, ceRB generates more cash than E.A. and they can still apply for the EEA once it’s over,” she says.
How long do you want the money?
In general circumstances, it takes about 30 days to get your benefits after applying for IS. According to the government’s website, “the IE formula was not designed to deal with the unprecedented maximum volume of programs won during the following week. With the avalanche of IE claims, it will probably take longer than the usual one, from the million other people who recently applied for, just over 10% had been processed on Wednesday, so you probably wouldn’t see that cash until May.
However, according to government estimates, CERB cash may be in people’s bank accounts by April 16, if you apply as soon as the portal opens.
Have you run out of pictures or are you running less?
If it’s still running a little technically, but doesn’t earn enough to make ends meet, you can apply for IS or CERB. But everything you do has to be informed and then deducted from what you get from the government. For example, if you get IS and you are self-employed and earn $120, that amount will be deducted from your profit.
Page says this underscores the federal government’s desire to increase the wage subsidy for small businesses. Currently, the federal government proposes to pay employers 10 percent of what an employee earns to help them stay on the payroll. This is much less than several European countries offer (the UK subsidy is 80%, Denmark 75%). Trudeau said more ads could be announced to allow corporations to continue paying their employees in the coming days.
Page says if you have the opportunity to stay on the payroll while earning more than the ER or CERB pays, take it, there is no waiting period, and it will be for the employer and employee when things return to normal.
“In some cases, the painter will make more money with the help of the government than if he stays in paintings and I think it’s a shame,” Page said. “If the government can simply raise wages and keep others in paintings to simply pay them for not painting, it can be more productive.
