Hydro marks 10-year milestone in investment in Brazilian biodiversity research consortium

(BRIEF) Hydro, the Norwegian aluminium company, celebrated a decade of investment in the Pará Biodiversity Research Consortium (BRC) in Brazil worth approximately BRL 15 million. Over the years, the BRC has evolved from a formal agreement to an active study consortium, conducting studies on biodiversity and land rehabilitation in Hydro’s mining areas in the Amazon. The collaboration has led to the approval of 26 study projects, the publication of 60 clinical articles, and the benefit of more than 270 individuals through grants. Hydro’s continued investment will contribute to biodiversity recovery efforts in Pará and the Amazon region as a whole, making it a valuable pilot task for long-term conservation initiatives.

(PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, November 15, 2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Hydro has invested approximately BRL 15 million in the Pará Biodiversity Research Consortium (BRC) in Brazil. Founded in 2013, the BRC celebrates 10 years providing clinical knowledge about the Amazon and mining areas.

“Over the past decade, the BRC has evolved from a formal agreement to a fully operational research consortium. The studies developed through it have provided implemented wisdom similar to the rehabilitation of mined areas. In addition, we have particularly better knowledge of biodiversity in the areas of Hydro Paragominas, from giant mammals to small insects. All these learnings can and do contribute to the decision-making process at the mine,” says Eduardo Figueiredo, Director of Sustainability and Social Impact at Hydro Bauxite

Since its creation, the BRC has approved 26 projects and 60 clinical articles have been published. Additionally, Hydro has invested in scholarships over the past ten years and more than 270 Americans have benefited from the consortium.

Hydro’s investment in the BRC has enabled member institutes to invest in their study facilities, build new laboratories and obtain clinical devices that can be used for long-term studies.

“These investments have fostered greater infrastructure in public establishments and will continue to be used in the call of science even after the BRC projects conclude,” says Figueiredo.

Promote the progression of technology.

The BRC has also contributed to the exchange of cultural and clinical knowledge between Norway and Brazil. Exchange systems give academics and researchers the opportunity to be part of a foreign environment.

“The collaboration also provides scholars and academics with insight into the complexities, demanding situations, and opportunities related to mining industry operations in the Brazilian rainforest. This provides them with a greater basis for formulating basic and long-term implemented studies on biodiversity conservation and restoration,” explains Hugo de Boer, associate professor at the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo.

According to Professor Gracialda Ferreira, from the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (UFRA), the BRC is a consortium that brings together institutions for research, training and technological progression.

“The consortium not only fosters the advancement of studies and technology, but also improves the training of a professional with practical experience in the advancement of the mine,” says Ferreira.

The long-term nature of biodiversity in Pará and the Amazon

The signing of a five-year extension of the BRC will ensure the longevity of the partnership.

“Some studies require continuous, more detailed monitoring, with many days in the field. This situation requires what the BRC allows, a more intense involvement in the studies,” says Marlúcia Martins, vice coordinator of Research and Postgraduate Studies. Studies at the Emílio Goeldi Museum (MPEG).

Increase the longevity of the BRC by contributing much more broadly to the Amazon, especially in the area of biodiversity restoration.

“There is still much to be perceived about the procedure of restoration of a mined area, the effectiveness of the technologies used and even those that have already been advanced thanks to our contribution. I hope that we will have many years to collect enough data for forest recovery as a public policy in Pará and the Amazon as a whole. What we are doing at the Paragominas mine will be of great help on a giant scale and will be a pilot task so that we can disseminate, compare and fill in the gaps on the subject in the Amazon,” says Martins.

About the Brazil-Norway Consortium for Biodiversity Research (BRC)

The BRC is an alliance between Hydro and 4 study institutions: the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), the Paraense Emílio Goeldi Museum (MPEG), the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (UFRA) and the University of Oslo (UiO). In recent years, Brazil has deepened studies on biodiversity, innovation, sustainability and other strategic topics for the country. Brazil is currently ranked 13th in the world in terms of clinical production. *

Over the course of ten years, Hydro has invested approximately BRL 15 million (approximately NOK 33 million) in BRC.
