Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are facing a devastating hurricane that has lost strength on the island of Puerto Rico, just as the fifth anniversary of the fatal and destructive Hurricane Maria is marked.
President Joe Biden legalized FEMA to provide emergency federal assistance to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in reaction to Hurricane Fiona, which hit Sept. 17 after strengthening in the wake of a tropical storm.
More than 1. 5 million people were left without power in Puerto Rico due to torrential rains, 85 mph winds and what the National Hurricane Service calls “catastrophic” flooding that battered the U. S. territory. In the Dominican Republic, Fiona made temporary landfall with winds around 90 mph, with destructive winds and flash flooding.
Here are organizations helping to provide relief in the wake of this new hurricane, according to ABC News.
Taller Salud is a feminist non-profit organization focused on women’s well-being and protection and anti-violence efforts. After Hurricane Fiona, they turned their efforts to relief efforts. diapers and more.
“The Taller Salud team is in a position to respond,” the organization said in a tweet. “Their collaboration will allow us to be efficient, effective and timely in responding to our people. “
The Puerto Rico Community Foundation has worked for more than 35 years to build renewable energy, clean water, housing, education and economic advancement for the others it serves.
The base reactivated the Community Recovery Fund for Puerto Rico to lend a hand in recovery efforts after Hurricane Fiona.
The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund, controlled through the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, provided humanitarian assistance to the island after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Maria killed about 3,000 more people and left the country’s infrastructure devastated.
The fund works with local organizations to address basic economic, agricultural and energy needs with the aim of providing rapid and sustainable assistance to communities.
The UN organization is on the ground offering emergency materials for recovery efforts in the Dominican Republic after severe flooding and power outages.
The UN is one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations and works with those suffering from climate change, fighting and other disasters.
GoFundMe has earmarked a page for verified fundraisers for those affected by the hurricane in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
“We work 24 hours a day to make sure certain affected families, businesses and communities get the fast and reliable they need,” GoFundMe said in a statement.
Verified fundraisers are controlled through GoFundMe and the budget is maintained until recipients can be added to the fundraiser to withdraw the cash themselves.
The Hispanic Federation has helped rebuild homes, gyms and farms, supply solar panels and more grid projects after Hurricane Maria. The federation responded by offering 25 relief planes carrying 7. 4 million pounds of food, water, medicine, solar panels. and resources to the island and coordinating with mayors on the floor to set up the delivery of donations.
After Hurricane Fiona, the Hispanic Federation is already offering emergency relief services.
Their efforts have combined with hyperlocal organizations like La Maraña and ViequesLove that in other facets of recovery, many of which grew out of the desires highlighted by Hurricane Maria.
SBP is a nonprofit founded in New Orleans, Louisiana, that was created after two volunteers saw what they called “inefficiency and unbearably slow progress” in the institutional or classic reconstruction processes in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. The organization aims to decrease the time between when a crisis moves and when recovery reaches those affected.
SBP says that as soon as weather situations are safe, it will land in Puerto Rico for recovery efforts.
The organization “will partner with local and regional organizations to identify contact lists and distribute recovery to affected communities,” according to SBP’s website.
He said he would “reach out to state, parish and municipal leaders in affected spaces to ensure certain survivors and communities have access to important recovery resources, survivors of fraud, and establish transparent and competitive recovery goals to rebuild temporarily and more robustly than before. . “
The Puerto Rico Foundation was established to “unlock Puerto Rico’s perspective on the global economy. “Now, the organization plans to prioritize relief efforts after Hurricane Fiona, soliciting donations and volunteers.
