SOMERSET – The citizens of Somerset County are paying tribute to our nation’s veterans this week with network presentations and celebrations to be held Saturday in commemoration of Veterans Day.
Many school districts in the county will offer special breakfasts and presentations to local veterans to thank them for their service to our country.

In Windber, second-grade elementary students had breakfast Thursday with local veterans and sang patriotic songs in their honor. Then, the veterans of Windber VFW Post No. 4795 gave a presentation to the students about who the veterans are, what they did, and how to showcase themselves. their respect for the American flag.
This year’s program was organized through Windber Elementary School second-grade teachers: Elyse Cameron, Nicole Ledney, Angie Rager, Megan Reitz, Cheryl Steinbeck, Katie Walker and Emma York.
In addition to local school programs, network members in Somerset and Cambria counties plan parades and memorials to honor our region’s living veterans.
The annual Veterans Day birthday party takes place on Saturday at 11 a. m. m. in Room 1 of the Somerset County Courthouse. A musical prelude begins at 10:45 a. m. , and the occasion also includes patriotic readings and musical performances.
This year’s featured speaker is Army Sergeant. Maj. Christopher J. Conti, of Somerset. Conti graduated from Plum Borough High School near Pittsburgh and then served four years on active duty in the Army. In 1992, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he still serves. In the National Guard, he served in Company C, 1-103rd Armor, becoming a tank commander and platoon sergeant.
Conti has carried out military missions at home and abroad, including Operation Desert Shield/Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in 1991; Lecture on Fuerza Dirigo in Guatemala, 1994; Task Force Keystone in Germany, 2002-2003 and Task Force Dragoon, Operation Iraqi Freedom III in Iraq, 2004-2005.
He has won army awards and decorations, adding the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Medal of Excellence.
Jerry Lyons will be the emcee of the Veterans Day program, and musical artists will come with the quartet “A Touch of Brass,” singer Danny Connor of Rockwood and the choral ensemble of Somerset Senior High School, led by Angela Brumbaugh.
On Saturday, there will be public parking at the courthouse.

The community’s annual Veterans Day occasion will kick off with a parade at 10 a. m. Parade participants are scheduled to gather at 9:30 a. m. m. at American Legion Station No. 137 Windber at 14th Street. The parade will then continue from 14th Street to Jackson Avenue, Park. Plaza to Graham Avenue and Jefferson Avenue to Veterans Park.
A Veterans Day program will be held at the end of the parade at Veterans Park. Gene Shaffer will be the master of ceremonies and will be a member of the Windber Veterans Association, the Windber Area High School Band and the Windber American Legion Post No. 137. and Windber VFW No. 4795 will be required to participate in the program.
The guest speaker is retired Air Force Colonel Douglas R. Lengenfelder, of Johnstown, who is the director of the Challenger Learning Center in Indiana and works for state Sen. Cris E. Previously, Lengenfelder served as Chairman of the Board of the U. S. Air Force Academy. U. S. Visitors, they taught at Penn Highlands Community College and served as a Cambria County commissioner.
During his military career, Lengenfelder accumulated more than 3,500 flight hours as a special operations pilot and instructor pilot. He served as special military adviser to the U. S. ambassador to NATO and served as commander for 12 of the last 14 years of his military service. .
The Windber American Legion will host a breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a. m. m. Saturday for veterans, their families and participants in the Veterans Day program. At the conclusion of the Veterans Day service, Windber VFW Auxiliary will host a Luncheon for Windber veterans, their family members, and participants in the Veterans Day service.
In the event of inclement weather, the Veterans Day service will be held at 10 a. m. at the Windber American Legion Building on 14th Street. The day’s events are through the Windber Veterans Association, which is comprised of members of Post No. 137 of the Windber American Legion. , the Windber VFW Post No. 4795, the World War II 50th Anniversary Commemorative Committee, and the Windber Veterans Park Committee.

The annual Veterans Day parade along Main Street in downtown Johnstown will take place at four p. m. Saturday. The theme of this year’s parade is the anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.
At the end of the parade, a Veterans Day rite will be held at Central Park Lookout, with Robert Symon, a retired Army and Korean War veteran, as a guest speaker. The parade and program are led by Conemaugh Valley veterans.
This year’s Veterans Day birthday party in Johnstown was also decided as the official regional Veterans Day through the National Veterans Day Committee.
