How Google Meet increased its ability to comply with the coronavirus call

Google has revealed how it expanded its Google Meet teleconferencing service to meet the call for online meetings on the coronavirus pandemic.

Rival Zoom reached one hundred million participants in daily pandemic meetings.

“As COVID-19 transformed our world into a more physically remote world, many others began turning to online video conferencing to maintain social, educational, and professional contacts,” said Samantha Schaevitz, a reliability engineer at the Google site, in a blog post. “Development has an effect on the virus in the way other people worked, learned and socialized with friends and the family circle has resulted in a much larger number of other people looking for facilities like Google Meet to stay in touch.”

The coronavirus first made the impression last December in the Chinese town of Wuhan. China imposed a travel ban on Wuhan citizens on 23 January. However, the effect of the pandemic was already being felt throughout the region.

On February 17, the Reliability Engineering team on Google’s Meet Site (SRE) was briefed on regional capacity issues of the service. “Because the Google user was redundantly designed, those alerts didn’t involve any disruption that users were aware of,” Schaevitz said in the blog post. “But it soon became apparent that the use of the product in Asia tended to increase dramatically.”

“The SRE team has begun working with the capacity plan development team to locate more resources to manage this increase, however, it is transparent that we want to start making plans further, so that the epidemic extends beyond the region,” Schaevitz added.

Italy began blocking COVID-19 soon after, while trying to fight the new coronavirus. Google Meet has also resumed use in Italy.

While the Mountain View, California-based company was preparing Google Meet for the needs of the pandemic, many facets of the stage were still unknown.

“Most of the social effects of COVID-19 were unknown or very difficult to predict,” Schaevitz added. “Our project was abstract: we had to avoid the breakdowns of what had a critical product for a lot of new users, while we evolved the formula without knowing where the expansion would come from and when it would stabilize.”

Like many companies around the world, Google has also made the transition to workers running from home. “Without the ability to be in the same room as everyone else, it has become vital to proactively manage communication channels to ensure that we all had access to the data needed to achieve our goals,” Schaevitz said.

Response commanders, communications officers and operations officers have been established in North America and Europe. Schaevitz, an incident commander.

Workflows have been configured around capacity, dependencies, bottlenecks, and “control buttons” for outages and production changes.

Google’s 21 knowledge centers worldwide have been used to double the available capacity of Google Meet. However, it soon became transparent that resources would be needed as the tech giant began to run towards a 50x expansion forecast.

In addition to expanding the capacity of its server, Google has also sought to make the Google Meet procedure more efficient. Schaevitz described this as “most requests are processed with the least resource load, without sacrificing user pleasure or system reliability.”

This has enabled the service to manage one hundred million participants in daily meetings consistent with the day, according to Google. In April, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the generation giant adds 3 million new users a day, an increase of 30 times since January.

During the company’s fiscal quarter, which ended on June 30, Google amassed more than six hundred million Meetrs in a week without getting married, according to Pichai.

Other teleconferences have also undergone a major expansion due to coronavirus locks and house paint requests. Zoom, for example, reached three hundred million daily participants at the end of April.
