Honduras will allow the use of the morning-after pill for rape victims after more than a decade of outright restrictions, the country’s health minister announced Monday, though a total ban on abortion will continue. The heavily Catholic country in Central America brought in an outright ban on the use and sale of the morning-after tablet in 2009, but had hinted it would change its stance on extreme cases for several years. The only country in Latin America that absolutely bans the morning-after tablet, Honduras also punishes women who have abortions with up to six years in prison, in addition to cases of rape or incest. “We are going to make the pill for rape victims because it is not a contraceptive method,” Health Minister José Matheu said at a meeting with women’s organizations on Monday night. “We are waiting for him to leave the regulatory unit to give him the signal. ” It’s unclear how the fitness government would determine rape allegations or distribute the tablet. Feminist organizations say the new policy does not go far enough in tackling unwanted pregnancies, especially in a country with the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Latin America, according to United Nations data. “This announcement is insufficient,” Maria said. Elena Méndez, director of the Honduran Center for Women’s Rights. “Other women who become pregnant are also victims of discrimination and cannot continue painting and studying, entering a circle of marginalization and misery. ” Women’s and human rights teams continue to call for the decriminalization of abortion in Honduras. Around 50,000 to 80,000 clandestine abortions occur each year in Honduras, local reproductive rights teams estimated in 2019.
