Amid growing fear of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country, Indian states have stepped up their health measures, focusing on surveillance and prevention to address this challenge. HMPV is a virus related to respiratory diseases. Well, what remains is: does HMPV thrive in winter by avoiding summer? Could it be the opposite of COVID-19?
Speaking to News 18 Hindi, Dr Karn Mehra, Head, Department of Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, Manesar, said that the HMPV virus is definitely winter-friendly and heat-hostile. He explained that HMPV is not a new virus. Although nothing can be said about what did or did not happen in China, the virus itself is well known and a lot is known about it. Dr. Karan Mehra explained that most flu-like viruses thrive in the winter months. They adapt and evolve smoothly in the cold. Furthermore, these viruses only thrive at temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius. As a result, these viruses tend to appear in winter and infect humans. Therefore, we can say that the HMPV virus is strongly related to winter.
Cases of HMPV have probably also been detected here in the past. However, due to the high testing burden, testing is not performed regularly and is not available everywhere. Additionally, HMPV symptoms are usually mild, and in most cases the infection goes away on its own. The symptoms resemble those of the flu, so the disease can be treated periodically with basic medications.
In an interview with News 18 Hindi, Dr. Karan Mehra explained that COVID-19 was a completely new virus, and there was no prior knowledge about it. He pointed out that there is no clear connection between the virus and the weather. If cases of COVID-19 surged during the summer, it could have simply been coincidental. However, it is well-established that most viruses tend to thrive more in the winter months. In this context, COVID-19 was an exception. As a result, we cannot definitively state that the COVID-19 virus doesn’t thrive in winter.
Senior Pulmonologist Dr. Sharad Joshi of Max Hospital, speaking to News 18, explained that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a new virus. Patients affected by HMPV have visited their OPD in the past. He also commented that in the last two months, he has observed patients with other viral infections such as influenza A, influenza B and H3N2, but none of them were in critical condition. According to Dr. Joshi, all patients were discharged after treatment. However, in some cases, the virus has affected the heart, requiring patients to be admitted to intensive care. He noted that patients with stronger immune systems temporarily recovered and returned home healthy.
Dr Pinaki R Debnath, Chief Defense Officer, Pediatric Surgery, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, told news firm ANI that HMPV existed earlier and has now disappeared due to some reasons such as lack of blood. “The human metapneumovirus is not a new virus, it is an old virus. This also existed previously. It broke out right now for some reasons, such as lack of blood. This occurs in a bloodless climate. It is a respiring RNA virus; infects the respiratory system… A viral infection spreads more when immunity is reduced or among older people. People over 60 to 65 years old or under five years old have low frame immunity. If the patient’s immunity is low, the spread of the virus is greater. That’s why we can see it in children,” he added.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, spokesperson, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kochi was quoted by news firm ANI as saying that HMPV is a common respiratory virus that most children contract before the age of 3. or 4 years. a serious challenge with this. Most young people, all of us together, would have had at least one attack of this infection in their childhood. . . It is not COVID. It is not a killer virus. This has been declining for many years in all countries, including ours,” said Dr Jayadevan.
