TEGUCIGALPA – The Honduran government announced Monday the discovery of more than 1. 6 million coca leaf trees in the largest seizure of its kind ever made as Honduras struggles to combat drug production.
“This is a historic seizure. We have dealt a severe blow to these drug trafficking organizations,” said Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Jose Coello.
Officials in the Central American country told reporters that the bushes, used to make cocaine, were found after a three-day operation over the weekend. They were divided into 42 blocks in at least 4 plantations in the mountainous spaces of the coastal arm of Colon.
The action brings overall seizures this year to 2,625,015 trees, particularly from the 424,900 trees discovered by the local government in 2020 and the 531,826 trees discovered in 2021, according to security force statistics.
“The entire defense and security design of the government is working to prevent you from actually fitting into a cocaine-producing country,” Deputy Defense Minister Col. Elias Melgar said in a government statement.
Honduras has been for more than two decades a cocaine movement zone crossing Central America from South America to Mexico and the United States, the drug’s top consumer, according to investigators.
