Heterogeneous vulnerability to COVID-19 and implications for inequality in Japan

We examine how the COVID-19 crisis may be a source of income inequality among heterogeneous Americans in Japan. We use the Employment Status Survey (ESS) to identify teams of Americans who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 crises, which are likely to affect staff. in other sectors, occupations and types of tasks with other magnitudes. We are assessing the effect on employment of a range of knowledge and early evidence, adding spending knowledge from JCB Consumer NOW in the early weeks of the pandemic. Our study identifies significant heterogeneity in vulnerability to COVID-19 crises among staff of other types. We see the crisis hitting teams with low revenue streams the hardest and is very likely to especially exacerbate inequalities across multiple channels, requiring urgent, large-scale assistance targeted at those who ed.
