OTTAWA — Health Canada has an updated edition of Moderna’s COVID-19 booster vaccine legal.
The new bivalent vaccine targets the BA. 4/BA. 5 subvariants of Omicron and is designed to be used as a booster dose for people 18 years of age and older.
This comes two months after Health Canada legalized a bivalent recall of Moderna, the Omicron BA. 1 subvariant and the original strain.
Health Canada says a bivalent recall triggers “an immune response” opposed to the last two subvariants of Omicron, as well as the original strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization that Omicron BA. 4 and BA. 5 are the dominant circulating strains.
They have several key mutations in the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, leading to NACI strongly bivalent enhancers targeting Omicron.
On Oct. 7, Health Canada approved the bivalent recall of Pfizer-BioNTech for use in those 12 and older. It also targets the Omicron BA. 4 and BA. 5 subvariants.
