China’s strict zero-COVID policies have spoiled the laughter of many attending Halloween festivities at Shanghai Disney Resort.

On Monday, the park closed abruptly, prompting many visitors to run unsuccessfully to the gates to get out. The park did not warn internal visitors or those waiting to enter about the immediate closure, and it’s unclear what kind of outbreak it caused. On Saturday, the park had announced it would operate with limited manpower and that some live events would be canceled, but the park remained open.

However, other people trapped inside posted on social media that various attractions were still running while others were undergoing mandatory testing. Anyone who tests negative will be able to leave, but will have to take 3 more tests in the next 3 days while self-isolating, local media reported. In addition, anyone who has visited the park since October 27 will also have to go through 3 tests in 3 days. The park did not say how many other people were trapped inside, but a similar closure last November, more than 30,000 visitors were trapped for two days until they tested negative or were sent back into quarantine.

Those who test positive will be taken to China’s infamous quarantine centers.

Another 14 million people are locked down in Shanghai after only 11 other COVID people

The sudden shutdown follows a similar debacle caused by panic at Foxconn’s iPhone factory in Zhengzhou over the weekend after some staff members tested positive. Media showed staff scaling the walls and fences of the factory in an attempt to escape. The government has reportedly discovered many to force them to quarantine to spread the virus.

About 1,000 new cases were reported in China for the fifth straight day on Saturday, state media reported. Last Wednesday, Beijing’s Universal Resort also closed abruptly, but since then all have tested negative or were transferred to quarantine centers.

China, the country of origin of COVID-19, remains the only country in the world that continues to impose a zero-COVID policy, with common lockdowns, without warning, in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. On Friday, officials announced the structure of a $221 million permanent quarantine facility in Shanghai to help monitor quarantined people.
