Carlos Poyon was only 3 years old when his father kidnapped him. Forty years later, the classic weaver is still reading anthropology, still hoping to locate his father.
Carlos also works for the Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala. It records survivors’ testimonies, takes DNA samples from those searching for the enjoyed disappeared, and participates in excavations of the remains of the missing.
Up to 45,000 more people have disappeared in Guatemala’s 36-year internal conflict. More than 80, and half of them were indigenous Mayan civilians.
Carlos and thousands of survivors continue to be done and justice 25 years after the 1996 peace accords.
