GUATEMALA CITY: An armed organization attacked an indigenous network in central Guatemala on Sunday, setting fire to their homes, the government said.
Authorities said the organization entered the village of Balbatzul in the town of Cubilguitz, about 120 km north of the country’s capital and populated by members of the Mayan ethnic organization Q’eqchi, early in the morning.
Police won warning calls for the attack and sent officials to the site, where they discovered that 40 families had been attacked, according to spokesman Jorge Aguilar.
The district attorney of Alta Verapaz is investigating.
Daniel Pascual, general coordinator of the Peasant Unity Committee, said an illegal armed organization had set fire to the homes of 40 peasant families after violently evicting them.
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said police and prosecutors were on site to investigate.
“Violence is not appropriate among brothers. We are involved on occasions in the cubulwitz, Cobán, Alta Verapaz network, and have coordinated with establishments to ensure the protection and life of neighbors,” he said on Twitter.
Guatemala’s Human Rights Attorney Jordan Rhodes called on the government to “conduct an investigation to identify” the perpetrators.
