One mother created a board game that celebrates the afterlife of blacks and brings accomplishments because she needs her child to grow up with a positive image she didn’t see as a child.

Greenhithe’s Fay Rose first developed the concept for her board game, “Excellence: Black Edition,” the first coronavirus lockdown in 2020.

The 35-year-old assignment officer at Guys and St Thomas Hospital was born in Nigeria and moved to the UK when she was one year old. She lived in Wales, Scotland and the Midlands for five years each before moving alone to London at the age of 17.

She said: “I grew up in predominantly white spaces across the UK. There was nothing in my space that represented me, or where I got here.

“At the time, everything in the media to perpetuate negative stereotypes, and I knew I wasn’t representative of other black people and the culture in general.

“So it’s vital for me to create anything that represents black culture in a positive light, especially so that my young son can see and notice his roots and his culture.

“I need it to have positive and inclusive representation. And I need other people from other backgrounds to take credit and be informed of anything as well. “

“It’s actually fun, it’s interactive and educational, and it will generate a verbal exchange and help other people connect. “

The anecdotes-based board game for two to six players introduced in February this year and can be purchased on Fay’s corporate website, where you can stop by clicking here. The board, with five categories: geography, music, film and television, sports and general culture.

The goal is to traverse Africa to try to reach the winning draw and the game features ancient figures such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X, but also existing icons Anthony Joshua and Daniel Kaluuya.

During the creation of the game, Fay approached Justina Lambert, who, along with her husband Max, owns Max’s Caribbean Kitchen in Dartford, to enroll in their company Excellence Games Ltd, and the duo worked together on the game’s trivial problems. .

Justina and her husband Max Lambert developed a sensory gift set called My Cultural Experience designed to teach others about black culture, which also includes a copy of Excellence: Black Edition, as well as food, drinks, and products to try.

Fay said: “The wonderful thing about Excellence Black Edition is that everyone can do it from all walks of life, communities, nationalities and backgrounds.

“This game is possibly based on black and urban culture, but learning new things about other cultures is called growing up. And developing like other people can only be positive. “

Fay has promoted her board game on occasions across the country, the Afro-Caribbean Fair in Nottingham, the Cocoa Festival in Epsom Downs in August and Life 2020 in Bristol.

Many prominent faces have played the board game, Shaun Wallace of The Chase and former member of So Solid Crew Swiss.

Swiss, who founded Black Pound Day, the monthly event where consumers are encouraged to black-owned businesses in the UK and Europe, said of the game: “The game of excellence has been enjoyed by me and my two children.

“I like how the general wisdom of my time in the game informs them through facts through which we can bond.

“The architecture of the game is good. I didn’t expect it to be so fun. “

Fay’s entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t stop him, as he has a game in the works.
