ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece reported 262 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, its highest count since the coronavirus outbreak began in the country.
The most recent increase in cases raises the total number of infections in Greece to 6,177 since its first case gave the impression in late February. There were 216 recorded deaths.
Of the new cases, 85 were recorded in the city of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, and 66 in the capital, Athens.
The buildup of infections in recent weeks has led the government to gradually introduce more restrictions at the peak of the tourist season.
From 17 August, visitors arriving from Sweden, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic will want evidence that they have tested negative for the entry of the new coronavirus. Please note that the check passes more than 72 hours before arrival.
On Wednesday, the civil aviation government extended the ban on flights from Turkey until 31 August and limited flights from Albania and Northern Macedonia to Athens airport only.
