UPDATE with the latest numbers: The number of covid cases among Google workers in Los Angeles has continued to rise after an outbreak first reported through Deadline two weeks ago. The good news is that the accumulation rate is lower this week than before.
Last week, the company’s Silicon Beach campus in Venice recorded 145 infections, while its massive Playa Vista resort experienced an outbreak of 135 cases. This week, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health panel, the numbers rose to 152 and 155. respectively, for a total of 307 infections.

That’s a thirteen percent increase from last week’s total of 280 infections, but a cry for the nearly 100 percent increase week-over-week reported by Google last week.
Google’s outbreak is no longer the largest among employers in Los Angeles County. This ignominious difference goes to LAX’s TSA. The worker outbreak has risen from 274 infections last week to 365 this week.
BEFORE Aug. 22: The number of covid infections among Google workers in the Los Angeles domain nearly doubled over the weekend, according to the count on the county’s official online page of the covid outbreak.
On Friday, Deadline reported that the tech giant’s sublime Silicon Beach campus in Venice had recorded 145 infections. This morning, the Los Angeles County Public Health Panel showed 135 newly recorded cases at the company’s massive Playa Vista complex. (There were still 15 other infections indexed Friday for the Venice campus that no longer appear today. )
Together, those 280 infections make up the largest for any employer in the year.
At LAX, 274 TSA workers are classified as infected. Similarly, 234 American Airlines workers, however, these entities are not only in contact with consumers, but likely handle the most pedestrian traffic in the county.
Google has 2,000 workers in Los Angeles, according to data from last year’s Los Angeles Business Journal. If so, it would mean that 14% of the company has been affected recently.
Specifically, the county’s outbreak panel lists Google’s “Hercules Campus at Playa Vista – Spruce Goose Hangar,” the dazzling renovated edition of the former Howard Hughes facility, which the company moved to in 2018.
It’s hard to know the status of the epidemic on Google. The deadline has been contacted by the tech giant and will upload the feedback received. There may be a delay between infection, screening, notification, and when the county panel after all reflects that count, however, the LADPH site is updated daily and did not include the Hercules campus outbreak on Friday.
