Global Cloud Xchange and its E-marine spouse are completing the maintenance of GCX’s undersea cable formula in the United Arab Emirates, while facing demanding situations and unprecedented restrictions through the COVID-19 global pandemic.
In the COVID-19 pandemic, despite strict procedures and restrictions affecting permit regulation, logistics and other critical measures necessary to ensure the fitness and protection of employees.
GCX has sent a mobilization request to its trusted spouse, E-marine, for the maintenance of its Falcon Gulf circuit in the adjoining UAE area. During maintenance, countries around the world introduced blocking measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and new procedures were changed and implemented not only through government regulators, but also through customs, immigration and local port government on a daily basis.
The fixed E-marine vessel CS Maram was temporarily remobilised for maintenance on its return from the paintings in the Red Sea after obtaining mandatory authorizations from the port authorities. The GCX and E-Marine groups worked diligently on a tight schedule to minimize the maintenance threat due to adjustments in government regulations. The fitness and protection of all shipping and flooring equipment is of paramount importance. The Gulf underwater formula was fixed and restored within a week of maintenance that was mobilized at the end of March.
E-marine PJSC has been notified through GCX in connection with the failure in the UAE. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of new regulations and protection regulations through the government, it is very difficult to mobilize the cable ship without delay for the repair operation. However, in response to the emergency, E-Marine received authorizations from the relevant government and made exceptional efforts to mobilize the cable ship at the appropriate time.
In addition, in the operation, the segment was observed to have multiple defects. As a result, E-marine was asked to bring more kits from his depot to send maram cable to the site, which was done temporarily through them by deploying an additional source shipment. The repair operation ended on April 3 and cable traffic was completely restored.
Omar Jassim Bin Kalban, executive director of E-marine, said: “E-marine is making more efforts to protect the interests of our consumers and repair the cable facilities involved as temporarily as possible. Our strategic location in the region allows us to adopt maintenance as successfully as possible, and the reputation we have built with the region’s relevant government for more than 3 decades is helping us temporarily download operational authorizations for our ships and equipment, even under unprecedented conditions, such as the ongoing COVID pandemic. In addition, the operation should be carried out with the highest criteria of quality, health, protection and environmental regulation (QHSE), so as not to endanger equipment and passengers. It is a delicate task, but our conscientiously established operational criteria/procedures and our ability. from our engineers and team we are helped to perform operations with aplomb in total protection.”
“The connection to all the cable contact stations was not without difficulties, and solutions for testing and strength had to be organized. The procedures were replaced because local access to the sites was limited due to curfews and other blocking rules,” said Surinder Sian, Senior Marine of GCX Manager, who supported the operation virtually because he was unable to succeed in sending as a GCX representative due to quarantine restrictions.
Brad Kneller, Head of Underwater Operations at GCX, said: “We have a long-standing and successful partnership with E-marine, which provides repair and maintenance facilities for our cables in the Middle East and Indian Ocean. Our priority, as with all solutions, is to bring the cable back to visitor traffic as temporarily as you can imagine while ensuring the protection of the entire body of workers, whether in E-marine and GCX. GCX continues to expand and run with reliable and resilient underwater connectivity solutions, and we take a look ahead of running with E-Marine for many more years.”
Since the end of March 2020 and coVID-19 blocking, GCX has provided more than 2 TB of bandwidth installations to its customers. GCX and E-marine presented their business continuity plans in advance to ensure the protection and well-being of their workers and partners and ensure the continued operation of their corporate facilities. Through a strong partnership, successful maintenance in times of crisis turns out to be as usual, even a global pandemic.
