Germany: Not accepting Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen is a mistake

“The fact that no agreement has been reached on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen is a European and geopolitical mistake,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told Digi 24, quoted by The Romania Journal.

According to the minister, the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen will continue, although the failure in the Council of the EU is a “great disappointment”.

“Romania and Bulgaria have done a lot to prepare to become members of Schengen. Romania, in particular, has made great efforts and has met all the requirements. That is why the fact that accession has now taken a position is a great disappointment. Until the last moment we fought for another solution,” Baerbock said.

“Even this year that has not been possible: the Council has not said ‘no’, it simply has not yet said ‘yes’. I am convinced that the Schengen club will continue. To this end, this factor is temporarily put on the EU agenda,” said Annalena Baerbock.

As the end of 2022 approaches, the Austrian government has recorded a significant drop in the number of asylum applications. From the beginning of the year until November, they surpassed 100,000 cases, Austria’s Interior Ministry announced Monday.
