Germany commits to invest €4 billion in green energy projects in Africa

BERLIN (AP) — The German government pledged Monday to invest 4 billion euros ($4. 37 billion) in green energy projects in Africa by 2030, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz saying African countries are getting more benefits from their commodity wealth.

Scholz spoke about this commitment at a press conference on the G20 Pact summit with Africa in Berlin. He did not mention any specific projects, but stated that the fabrics used in green energy will be processed in the African countries where they come from.

“This creates jobs and prosperity in those countries,” Scholz said. “And Germany is looking for reliable suppliers. “

The Compact with Africa is based on an initiative presented through Germany, its presidency of the Group of 20 major rich and emerging countries. Its objective is to improve the economic situation of the participating countries to make them more attractive for foreign private investment.

Scholz said Germany deserves a reliable and long-lasting spouse for African countries.

“Africa is our chosen spouse when it comes to intensifying our economic relations and moving together towards a climate-neutral future,” he said.

The countries of the Africa Pact are Egypt, Ethiopia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia, according to the German news agency dpa. .

When asked about China’s strong presence in Africa, several African leaders said the continent is open to other partnerships.

“Perhaps China has been bolder, has more vision and believes in Africa’s potential,” said Moussa Faki, chairperson of the African Union Commission.

“The African continent is open to other partnerships,” he added. “Our wish is that you position your acceptance as true in us, that we impose fewer situations and that we create them together. . . .

“Improving governance is our responsibility, so this shared vision can allow, I am sure, significant capital to be invested in the continent,” Faki said.
