BERLIN (AP) — The German government warned the elderly, others with fitness problems, pregnant women and parents of young children Friday to seek cool places amid forecasts of very high temperatures over the weekend.

The country’s meteorological agency, DWD, forecast that the mercury could reach 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) with maximum humidity, especially in the west of the country on Saturday. The heat will extend eastward through Sunday, reaching highs of 37C (99F), he said.

The German Health Ministry has suggested others stay indoors, consume enough fluids and avoid strenuous activities, especially during the day.

Austria, where temperatures are expected to top 35C on Monday, announced a hotline for other people to get recommendations on how to deal with the heat.

The southern state of Carinthia has activated a heat protection plan for more than 900 nursing homes, hospitals and other sites to identify others who might be vulnerable to high temperatures.

Every year, thousands of other people across Europe die from heatwaves, a challenge experts say will only accumulate due to climate change.

Worldwide, scientists this week declared 3 new unofficial temperature records.

Carinthia’s most sensible fitness official, Beate Prettner, said humans are the only ones who want to protect themselves from the heat.

“Provide enough water to your four-legged friends, make sure they have a place in the shade, and don’t underestimate the threat of leaving animals in a car,” he said. “A few minutes can already have dramatic consequences. “
