German farmers warn that meat packers will have to paint more hours to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions

Reuters reports that a number of German meat packing plants have hot spots for COVID-19 this summer, adding to Toennies’ huge red meat slaughterhouse and meat packing plant in central Germany.

This has a primary disorder in the meat industry with higher tax criteria and to meet new coronavirus prevention needs, German slaughterhouses have reduced their processing capacity, said Franz-Josef Holzenkamp, president of the Association of German Agricultural Cooperatives.

Health coverage “always has priority,” but adjustments mean farmers face delays in the location of slaughterhouses for their pigs, Holzenkamp said.

Slaughter pigs can be sent with abundant delays to slaughterhouses and grow too much on farms, he said.

The arrangement envisages a break from the abattoirs, especially on Sundays.

Farmers are also suffering from falling costs due to German bans on the importation of red meat following the discovery of African swine fever (PPA) in the country’s wild boars, he said.
