Frenchman Benoit Paire withdraws from US Open draw after positive for COVID-19

Frenchman Benoit Paire has become the first player to test positive for COVID-19 at the US Open and withdrew from the tournament.

The tournament did not decide on Paire through his name, although he stated that the player had tested asymptomatic positive.

The French newspaper L’Equipe reported that the player is Paire, who is ranked 22rd in the world, seeded and holds 3 individual titles in his career.

The tournament said the player “must isolate for at least 10 days. In addition, contact tracing has been initiated to determine if anyone must quarantine for 14 days.”

Paire, 31, arrived in New York to play in the Western and South Open last week for the U.S. S Open, but did not finish his first-round attack on Croatian Borna Coric.

Paire gave the impression of not feeling well the match, asking for a doctor in the first set before retiring at the time with a 6-0, 1-0 mark.

Paire will be replaced in the men’s draw through Marcel Granollers, a 34-year-old Spaniard ranked 134th. Granollers will now face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in the first on Tuesday.

Ironically, Granollers performed anti-coronavirus antibody tests before this month.
