Franchisee’s Bankruptcy Closes A Tuscaloosa Wendy’s, Others Remain Open For Now

A fast food franchisee permanently closed one of their locations in Tuscaloosa last month before declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving questions about the future of their other five locations in the region.

Florida-based Starboard Group operates more than a hundred locations for brands including Cicis Pizza, Subway, McAlister’s Deli and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, but its Alabama operations are at Wendy’s.

According to its website, Starboard Group operated six Wendy’s in West Alabama: 3 in Tuscaloosa and one each in Northport, Brent and Demopolis. However, last month, his Wendy’s on 15th Street in Tuscaloosa closed permanently.

The shutdown came just before Starboard filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month, with QSR magazine reporting that they had closed 11 sites “with more likely on the way. “

CEO Andrew Levy attributed the move to COVID-19, problems with the chain, poor investments in Brazil and the burden of extensive and mandatory renovations at several Wendy’s locations.

For now, Starboard’s other Wendy’s locations in western Alabama remain open, adding restaurants on Oscar Baxter Drive near Lowes, Wendy’s on Five Points and the Northport store on McFarland Boulevard.
