“The epidemiological situation, which we are following very closely, is deteriorating: 2,000 new cases a day to 1,000 3 weeks ago,” Castex said at a news convention at a hospital in Montpellier, according to the BBC.
France came out of its strict blockade in May with seven days of 272 new infections. On Monday, the seven-day measure increased to 1640 from 1,056 a week earlier, France24 reported.
In reaction to the accumulation of cases, Castex announced that France will extend the ban on public gatherings of more than 5,000 people until 30 October. He also asked the local government to extend a court order to wear a mask in public.
He said that if France acts together, the country would face an increase in infection rate that will be difficult to control.
“The next few days and weeks will be to prevent you from resuming the epidemic,” the prime minister tweeted. “Everyone has a role to play, adding young people: being vigilant, respecting the gestures of the barrier, protecting themselves, protecting others.”
