France has recorded its highest number of new Covid-19 cases since June, with a figure that was almost as high as Spain’s daily rate. Now that Spain is officially back on many country’s quarantine lists, it seems increasingly likely that many might ban quarantine-free trips to France if it cannot stem the tide.
On Wednesday, August 5, France registered 1,695 instances. As reported in The Telegraph, Spain registered 1,772 new instances on the same day.
In the last two weeks, France has recorded an average of 22 cases consisting of 100,000 inhabitants. By way of comparison, The Telegraph noted that Spain had 35 instances consistent with 100,000 inhabitants when it was removed from the list of “safe” countries of the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where quarantine is not mandatory to return (Spain has since counted 78 instances).
France is running to slow the acceleration of cases, largely attributed to other younger people who faint in bars and on unmasked holidays. Wearing a mask is mandatory in all public places covered in France, however, many cities have added streets and markets, especially in Nice and La Rochelle.
Le Monde reported that Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo was also making plans for an imminent resolution to make the face mask mandatory in giant parts of the French capital. The local said he was running with the police where the mask deserves to be required.
The towns and villages on the Swiss border in Haute-Savoie have also been masked in social gatherings of more than 10 people and in outdoor markets.
Malta and Belgium have also seen cases rise in the past few days, to the point that their rates are now higher than Portugal or Sweden, the latter of which are both on the “red” list for U.K. visitors, where people must go into quarantine on their return.
Malta and Belgium are recently on the safe list, however, the British government said thursday that it would upload Belgium to its list of countries where quarantine is essential.
The UK is expected to take a resolution within the next 24 hours of its weekly review.
As of Wednesday, August 5, 2020, France had reported a total of 30,305 deaths, adding nine pf in the last 24 hours.
