France and the Philippines sign a security agreement to allow joint military combat exercises

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — France and the Philippines are contemplating a defense deal that would allow them to send military forces into each other’s territory for joint exercises. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Saturday at a joint news conference with French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu that they are seeking authorization from their heads of state to begin negotiations on a prestige force agreement to expand defense ties. The agreement provides a legal framework for visits by foreign troops. Lately, the Philippines has only had such agreements with the United States and Australia.
