The explosion occurred around 1 a. m. on Thursday near the eastern city of Calimanesti, the emergency said in a statement.
The cause was “the rupture of a fuel transport pipe and the appearance of mechanical sparks” in the structural works, said spokesman Florin Olaru.
Local media said he hit the pipeline with a shovel, triggering the explosion.
Authorities cordoned off the area about 500 meters from the blast site as firefighters worked to put out the resulting blaze, he added.
Four other people were found dead at the scene, while five others, burned, were taken to the hospital in the Adjud commune.
