Former McDonald’s reopens without branding in Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Several McDonald’s-branded restaurants in Kazakhstan reopened Monday, Jan. 23, without branding to serve generic fast-food names like “Cheeseburger,” weeks after the U. S. company left the local market.

The former Food Solutions KZ licensee said it will maintain “the highest quality and service criteria adopted in the past” and introduce its new logo soon.

McDonald’s and Food Solutions KZ terminated their licensing agreement this month, raising origin issues. Previous sources told Reuters that McDonald’s Kazakhstan had stopped buying materials from Russia and was struggling to upgrade them.

Food Solutions KZ said Monday whether it had replaced parts such as beef burgers with Kazakh produce and declined to comment on the issues addressed in its statement.

Their new menu included pieces like beef, poultry and fish burgers, as well as poultry nuggets, fries and ice cream.

McDonald’s closed its Russian restaurants shortly after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine last February, and eventually promoted a local licensee, Alexander Govor, who unveiled the Vkusno logo in June.
