TOKYO (AP) — Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was taken to hospital Friday after he was shot dead through what appeared to be a guy with a shotgun while giving a speech in the western city of Nara, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Abe, 67, gave the impression of being in a state of cardiac arrest, the network and news firm Kyodo said. Gunshots were heard and a mouthful of white smoke was noticed as Abe gave an outdoor campaign speech at an exercise station, NHK said. .
An NHK reporter at the scene said he heard two consecutive detonations of Abe’s speech.
The Chief Cabinet Secretary will brief the media at 04:00 GMT.
Abe served two terms as prime minister to Japan’s longest-serving prime minister before resigning in 2020 due to health problems.
But it had a dominant presence over the ruling liberal democratic party (LDP), controlling one of its factions.
His protégé, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, faces a choice for space on Sunday in which analysts say he hopes to emerge from Abe’s shadow and outline his post as prime minister.

Abe, however, failed in his long-standing purpose of revising the U. S. -drafted letter through the SDF directory, as the Japanese military calls them, in the pacifist Article 9.
He was instrumental in winning the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, appreciating the preference to preside over the Games, which were postponed by a year until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Abe first took office in 2006 as Japan’s youngest prime minister since World War II. After a year plagued by political scandals, voter outrage over the loss of pension records and a humiliating election for his ruling party, Abe resigned and cited health problems.
He was prime minister in 2012.
Abe comes from a wealthy political circle of relatives that included a foreign minister father and a great-uncle who served as prime minister.
