Foreign ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia meet for trilateral talks in Kazakhstan

ANKARA

Ministers from Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia met Friday for trilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana.

Earlier, statements from the offices of senior diplomats said Sergey Lavrov, Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan would talk about the existing scenario in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and the implementation of agreements signed after a Russian-brokered truce between Baku and Yerevan at the meeting.

Before the meeting, Lavrov said he hoped to talk about the implementation of the trilateral agreements on Karabakh reached in November 2020 and January 2021 to perceive “how to move forward. “

“A separate issue is the negotiation of a peace treaty in addition to agreements on the unblocking of economic and maritime communications, and the realization of the delimitation through the status quo of a bilateral commission between Azerbaijan and Armenia with the consultative assistance of the Russian side,” Mr. Lavrov said.

For his part, Bayramov said the Azerbaijani aspect will focus on preparing a peace agreement with Armenia.

“We will talk about those facets of the post-conflict agreement for which the foreign ministers are responsible. In particular, we are talking about a peace agreement, the issue we are discussing,” he added.

The timetable of the assembly will also come with other problems similar to peace in the South Caucasus, adding border demarcation, unblocking communications and humanitarian problems, he added.

The Karabakh region was liberated from nearly three decades of 44-day clashes between the Armenian profession in autumn 2020, which ended after a ceasefire brokered by Moscow. The peace agreement is celebrated as a triumph in Azerbaijan.

The CIS summit began on Friday morning under the auspices of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
