“Our policy revolves around respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity (of other nations),” Iran’s most sensible diplomat said Friday after the inauguration of Iran’s consulate general in the southern Armenian city of Kapan, stressing that the Iranian embassy in Yerevan will do its job. The foreign minister also welcomed the status quo of the diplomatic project and thanked his colleagues in the Iranian Foreign Ministry and diplomats in Armenia for their contribution to development, Press TV reported.
Iran’s resolve to open the new diplomatic project underscores the quality of “centuries-old” ties between the two countries, Amirabdollahian noted, saying Iran is in a position to host an Armenian consulate general in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz.
“Armenia is a vital north-south transit route,” the foreign minister said, insisting that Tehran will try to facilitate and speed up the transportation of other people and goods through the pipeline.
For his part, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said he can “confidently” describe the opening of Iran’s Consulate General as a progression toward strengthening mutual relations.
“Today is a day for the ancient and centuries-old ties between Iran and Armenia, as well as for the smart neighborhood (that exists) between the countries,” he added.
Describing the 30-year ties between Tehran and Yerevan as “strategic,” Mirzoyan stressed: “I am convinced that many efforts will now be made to (strengthen) and relations (the nature of)” between the countries.
He also welcomed Tehran’s goal of allowing the opening of an Armenian diplomatic project in Tabriz, reiterating that “Iran has been and will remain Armenia’s partner. “
