Flu and COVID-19 vaccine appointments in Alberta begin Oct. 16

Eligible Albertans can begin booking their flu and COVID-19 vaccines starting Oct. 10, the government announced Thursday.

Appointments will begin on October 16.

There are 3 other tactics for booking: calling 811, contacting a clinic directly, or the online system.

People living in congregate care settings will be able to access COVID-19 and flu vaccines at their facilities starting the week of Oct. 2.

“Being vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 can help you and your loved ones, especially those who are at higher risk for severe illness,” Dr. Mark Joffe, Alberta’s chief medical officer, said in a news release.

Health Canada recently approved Moderna’s updated formulation for its monovalent COVID-19 vaccine. It only targets the Omicron XBB. 1. 5 subvariant, which means the vaccine is better suited for virus strains circulating lately.

Health Canada has stated that Canadians over the age of five receive one dose, regardless of their COVID vaccination history. Meanwhile, children ages six months to four years old get two doses if they haven’t already been vaccinated with a COVID vaccine, or one dose if they’ve already won at least one dose.

Canadian officials expect deliveries to the provinces to begin in October.

Two more are still in the works for the fall COVID vaccines.
