Florida State football head coach Mike Norvell conducted COVID-19 tests.
The first-year head coach announced through an exchange through the school that he had tested positive for Friday after negativeing each of this week’s last two checks.
Their mandatory quarantine will continue next weekend, meaning he may not be sidelined when the Seminoles play in Miami, Florida, on September 26.
He said his wife and daughter had either tested positive or were in quarantine.
“My result surprised me, but we are ready for a possible positive end result among all members of our program and will put this plan in place while I am away,” Norvell said in a statement.
“I will remain concerned from a distance as much as possible to help our team continue to prepare. Assistant head coach Chris Thomsen will take on the role of head coach on the user until he can return.
“I am grateful to the administration, the players and their commitment to the protocols we have, which have helped us restrict contact with others and have moved us forward. “
Norvell is the 3rd Bowl Subdivision head coach to test positive for COVID-19, Toledo coach Jason Candle positive in July and UCLA coach Chip Kelly positive in March. check.
It is not known whether Florida players or staff have also tested positive or made the decision to be excluded from the touch search due to Norvell, however, the fact that it is a week off for the Seminoles greatly decreases the chances.
Florida state athletics director David Coburn said in another that he had no explanation as to why he believed the Miami game was in danger right now.
“It’s unfortunate, but fortunately, the coach feels good. We are proceeding with our COVID protocols as we would in any other case,” Coburn said.
“The coach is remote and the university university staff handles the contact search as they do. We will continue to review staff and student-athletes as we have.
“We contacted Commissioner John Swofford and Miami Sports Director Blake James. Right now, based on our evidence this week, we have no explanation as to why the Miami game is in danger. “
Thomsen is the only other Norvell staff member to have enjoyed full-time head training at the school level. He was the head coach of Division II Abilene Christian from 2005 to 2011. During that time, he led the team to a 51-21 record. and six consecutive playoff appearances.
