All athletes worldwide compete in the Olympic Games for one thing: a gold medal.
Silver medals are made from natural silver, while bronze medals are made from approximately 95% copper and 5% zinc. But the medals from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will have their special touch.
Each medal will include an 18-gram hexagonal wrought iron piece of the monumental Eiffel Tower. The iron was removed from the Eiffel Tower during the 20th century renovation and preserved. The reverse of the Olympic medals will feature the popular Olympic rings and the Greek goddess of victory: Nike.

Lamé is an electrically conductive garment worn over the scoring area for the sword type of fencing. The lamé allows hits to be recorded automatically.
The blade may cover the frame more or less depending on the blade used by the shooter. There are three other blades used in modern fencing: the foil, the épée and the saber.
The foil is the one known of the 3 disciplines. It has the smallest target domain and is lightweight, allowing for many other attacks.
The sword is also a thrust blade but has a maximum weight of 775 grams (1. 7 pounds). Only the tip of the blade counts when touching the opponent, but your own target is the entire frame, so there is no blade.
The main difference with the epee and foil is that you cannot use the “fast attack” with the blade of the sword because it is much heavier. The other difference is that the total frame is a scoring area.
The important thing about the saber blade is that the frame of the blade marks in addition to the tip.
The first 15 points win, and the action takes place in 3 3-minute periods, with one-minute periods as breaks.

The Olympic rings are displayed during all world Olympic seasons. But what do they really represent?
The five rings were raffled in honor of the athletes of the Games. Each ring represented a region of the world where the athletes came from: Africa, America, Europe, Asia.
The colors of the rings, from left to right, are blue, yellow, black and red. They are placed on a white background to symbolize the universality of the Olympic Games.
While the iconic design was made in 1913 and the flag with the logo a year later, in 1914 it wasn’t until 1920 that the rings made their Olympic debut.
“In addition, the six combined colors reproduce those of all nations without exception. “

The Olympic motto comes from before the start of the official Olympic Games.
The original motto was first uttered in 1881 by the Dominican priest Henri Didon at the opening rite of a sporting event.
Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Olympic movement, was in the crowd at Dido’s speech and followed those words as his Olympic motto in 1894.
“It expresses the aspirations of the Olympic Movement,” the IOC said. “Not in its athletic and technical sense, but also from an ethical and educational perspective. “
The slogan was replaced by a consultation by the International Olympic Committee in July 2021.
Now it reads in Latin “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter”. Which in English means “Faster, higher, more powerful – together”.

A report by the French Center for Sports Law and Economics indicated in 2016 that the 2024 Olympic Games “could generate up to $11. 6 billion and up to 247,000 jobs. “
“Of these $11. 6 billion, between $1. 5 billion and $3. 79 billion (between 13 and 33 percent) are attributed to tourism-like economic effects,” the study says.
This study was conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic and skyrocketing inflation, so take the above figures with some caution.
To keep up with prices, the tourist tax is now 200%. The tax raises room rates from $2. 82 to $16. 23 per night and through Oxford Economics.
The French hope is that tourists stopping at the Games will be able to return and see things they didn’t get the chance to see at the Games.
France will attract around 101 million foreign tourists this year, the number of European destinations, up from 98 million tourists in 2023, according to Oxford Economics. However, most of those tourists come for the Olympic Games.
The IOC understands the ramifications of what the Olympic Games can mean in the long term for a city and a country.
“As the first Olympic Games aligned with Olympic Agenda 2020, Paris 2024 demonstrates that the Games can bring truly broad economic benefits to their hosts, while also being socially and environmentally responsible,” said Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi, the IOC.
“These are Games that are indeed tailored to the wishes of their host and the times in which we live, creating a lasting legacy before the Opening Ceremony and long after the sporting competitions have ended. “
According to the IOC, around 181,000 people are applying or preparing for roles related to the Games.
“80% of public investments go to Seine-St-Denis, one of the youngest and most disadvantaged departments in France. The Olympic Village, for example, in Seine-Saint-Denis, will offer 2,800 housing complexes and two new schools, for the benefit of 6,000 residents.
The IOC’s goal is for the Olympics to have not only a short-term effect on the economy, but also a long-term effect that leaves the host city in a better position after the games than before.

Paris has already spent $9.7 billion on Olympic expenses, and the French taxpayers are paying for about $3.25 billion of that according to The Associated Press.
There’s also no guarantee you’ll get that cash back.
The IOC projects that Paris will reap $12. 2 billion in economic benefits from those games, leaving them in the dark if they go ahead.
The IOC states that “the economic benefits for the city, the region and the country are expected to exceed the investments related to the Games. “
However, the figures from previous games tell another story.
In 2008, Beijing spent a whopping $42 billion and raised $3. 6 billion.
According to the University of Oxford, every single Olympic Games since 1960 – with the exception of Los Angeles in 1984 – has exceeded budget by an average of 172%.
The explanation for the success of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles is that most of the infrastructure needed for the Games has already been built.
Paris has built only one festival venue for the 2024 Games, depending on the infrastructure already built and the transitional venues from having to build so many new venues.
Time will tell if the Paris 2024 Games can join the Los Angeles 1984 Games as the only successful Olympic Games in the last 64 years.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the Seine on Wednesday, fulfilling her promise to show that the river is empty enough before the 2024 Olympics.
Since 2015, organizers have spent $1. 5 billion to clean up the Seine before the Olympics.
People were prohibited from swimming in the river for more than a century due to concerns about the river and its pollution. Even in early June, tests by monitoring organization Eau de Paris indicated harmful levels of E. coli until recent advances.
Cleaning the Seine has been a long-standing goal for the French. Former French president Jacques Chirac promised to clean the river in 1988, when he was mayor of Paris, but to no avail.
Hidalgo initially intended to swim across the Seine in June, but had to be delayed due to early parliamentary elections in France.
When the date of Hidalgo’s swim was announced, the French gained an Internet trend “I poop on the Seine” to protest the Olympics for defecating before the mayor’s swim.
The Seine River will be the highlight of the Opening Ceremony and will host several open water swimming occasions at the Olympic Games, adding the marathon, swimming and swimming stages of the Olympic and Paralympic triathlons.
