Aug. 5 (UPI) – A chimney in Berlin’s Grunewald Forest has been largely controlled, officials said Friday after the forest caught fire due to several giant explosions at a munitions disposal site.
The chimney burned nearly four acres and battled more than a hundred firefighters, Berlin firefighters said.
Although there are no houses nearby, the government has set up a half-mile perimeter to seal and has planned to use robots and armored vehicles to assess any other dangers. They also closed roads and railways.
Berlin fire chief Karsten Homrighausen said he still posed a risk on Friday.
“It will take time for us to master everything,” he told CNN.
Dry situations and excessive heat added to the effort while the country lived one of its record days.
