Although the race to produce a COVID-19 vaccine becomes increasingly congested, scientists at Northwestern University in the United States have discovered a new vulnerability in the new coronavirus that can lead to its possible treatment. The new vulnerability has been attributed to the new Coronavirus protein that allows the virus to enter human cells, according to a report from the PTI news agency. Research published in the journal ACS Nano found that complex protein comprises the binding site of the virus that is helping the virus penetrate into the human body and multiply in number.
Using complex protein simulations at ultra-small scales, scientists discovered a definitively loaded site that allows the virus to strongly link to negatively charged human mobile receptors that lead the virus into the human body. The definitely loaded site is located 10 nanometers from the actual binding site in the complex protein. The definitely loaded site is also known as a polybasic excision site.
Inspired by the discovery of the definitely loaded polybasic excision site, scientists artificially designed a negatively charged molecule that can bind to the definitely charged excision site, while blocking contact between the virus and human cells.
Monica Olvera of the Angels Cruz, co-author of northwestern University’s study, told PTI that studies can lead to an angelic prophylactic remedy of coronavirus that will minimize the virus’s ability to infect human cells. He also claimed that the remedy would be based on blocking the definitely loaded split site that binds to human cells to cause an infection. He added that the location of the polybassic excision sites in the new coronavirus had evaded studies until now from the onset of the disease.
After effectively locating polybassic excision sites, scientists plan to work with pharmaceutical corporations to expand a new drug that can bind to the virus’s complex protein and prevent its infection through human cells.
