As part of a special open street during the holidays, Fifth Avenue will be closed to cars and become a winter wonderland on all three Sundays in December. The Fifth Avenue Association on Tuesday unveiled the “Gift of the Fifth” crusade that will turn the historic 49th-59th Street saloon into a holiday destination, with cheerful décor, festive food and drinks, photo ops, in-store giveaways and more.
Last week, Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to make Fifth Avenue fully pedestrian from 48th and 59th Streets, widening the open street 3 blocks to reach Central Park. Starting November 20, the upper portion of Fifth Avenue will be a winter wonderland. The hall will feature all-new sidewalk décor, adding an installation of 150 live Fraser and Noble fir trees glowing with warm white lights, sitting atop 50 traditional silver platforms. On Dec. 17, the Doris Duke Foundation will bring Grammy Award-winning jazz singers to pay tribute to Fifth Avenue’s complex role in jazz history.
