Federal investment in education remains in limbo ahead of The New Year in Alberta

There is still no date when the school government will be able to access Alberta’s percentage of the $2 billion in federal investment pledged last week for plans to reopen provincial schools.

The Alberta government said it had still won some of its $262.8 million in investment announced Tuesday through Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and that the province’s school districts are just a few days away from welcoming academics for the fall semester amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Given the investment suddenly announced Tuesday, officials are still investigating how this investment will be distributed to Alberta’s school authorities,” Colin Aitchison, education minister Adriana LaGrange’s press secretary, said in a statement.

“Right now, I can’t give a schedule because we haven’t made investments from the federal government yet.”

The Sofina Foods/ Lilydale poultry processing plant in Calgary will remain open despite the development of a COVID-19 outbreak.

An Alberta health official said Friday that there had been 19 cases of the virus, 18 of which were still active.

But a corporate official said the number is now higher than that.

“Alberta Health Services (AHS) demonstrated that after encouraging all of our workers to get tested for the time being, nine others tested for COVID-1nine. This raises our total to 27 workers, all of the same shift,” spokeswoman Daniele Dufour told The Canadian Press in an email.

Two members of the Canadian army who recently returned to Canada from the Middle East tested COVID-19, the Ministry of Defense said Saturday.

In a statement, the department said the Canadian Armed Forces members were aboard a flight bringing 35 personnel from Operation IMPACT, a Middle East training mission, back to Canada.

“Although all COVID-19 protocols and safety and fitness precautions have been observed before, during and after the flight, there is still a threat to deployed personnel,” he said.

The union representing meat processing plant staff amid a COVID-19 outbreak is calling on the Alberta government to close temporarily.

Thomas Hesse, president of Local 401 at United Food and Commercial Workers, said staff at the Lilydale bird processing plant in Calgary did not feel after 19 plant staff members tested positive for coronavirus.

“Health and government officials, corporate officials and trade union representatives have been closely monitoring this evolving situation,” Hesse said in a statement. “Unfortunately, despite recent interventions, the number of positive cases continues to increase. Everything you do is obviously not enough. The threat of spread is too high and prospective prices are too high.”

Sofina Foods, which operates the Calgary Lilydale plant, did not respond to requests for comment.

Alberta reported that an outbreak of coronavirus at the Harmony Beef processing plant had woken up after previous instances at the same facility in March and May. Thirty-eight employees of the plant, just north of Calgary in Balzac, tested positive for COVID-19 in this new outbreak.

An outbreak occurred at Harmony Beef in early May and the plant suspended its slaughter in March after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency retained its plant inspectors when a painter tested positive for COVID-19. About 440 other people’s paintings at the Harmony Beef plant.

Harmony Beef spokesman Crosbie Cotton said it’s disappointing to see the new cases. He said the staff affected are self-isolated and that production at the plant will be reduced by 50% next week.
