Campaign and investigative journalism revered in the first Publishers Society Media Freedom Awards.
The winners were praised for their “courage, determination and bravery” and their “vital work” in holding those in question accountable.
Awards night at London’s Underglobe Theatre saw the Daily Mirror named News Media Organization of the Year, while Netherlands-based open-source platform Bellingcat was named International News Media Organization of the Year.
PA Media News won the judges’ press freedom award for its advocacy of open justice on behalf of the news industry at large.

Commenting on PA’s victory, PA editor-in-chief Pete Clifton said, “PA is passionate about open justice and I am very pleased that this has been recognized by the Society of Publishers.
“We are in courts across the country, day in and day out, to get justice, and our bloodhounds never hesitate to challenge court orders that limit their right to inform.
“Playing our component in courtroom assignment is another step forward in opening up justice. “
Pippa Crerar named Journalist of the Year for her “Partygate” scoops while she was political editor of the Daily Mirror.
The newspaper won the investigation of the year for its report on the breaking of the Covid lockdown at the center of government.
The Daily Mail won the Campaign of the Year award for its exposure on the risks of motorways, and the young activist award went to Mail journalist Isaan Khan for his investigations into allegations of racism at the Yorkshire Cricket Club.
The Mail also won the Freedom of Information Award for its exclusivity on how the formula of justice had allowed more than 22,000 notable court orders to go unchecked for others who had not given the impression in court.
The News in Portsmouth won the regional crusade of the year for its paintings opposing proposals for the questionable £1. 2 billion Aquind interconnector between France and the city of Hampshire.
Belfast’s Sunday Life won the Regional Research of the Year award for its remembrance Sunday exclusivity in a “show of force” through one of Northern Ireland’s paramilitary groups and thieves, the South East Antrim UDA.
The Scotch’s Connor Matchett was named regional reporter of the year for work that included exclusivity that ministers had intervened to release Covid nursing home death figures ahead of the 2021 Holyrood election.
The winners of the broadcast included the BBC’s Panorama programme for its investigation into the Post Office Horizon scandal, while Sky News’ Alex Crawford won Foreign Correspondent of the Year for his reporting from Afghanistan and Ukraine.
The Voice Newspaper, the surviving black newspaper in Britain, has been awarded the Special Judges’ Award in honour of 40 years of campaigning for the community.
The Bob Satchwell Award, in memory of the company’s founding director who died in 2021, was awarded to Americans and organizations of the crusade for cameras in the Crown courts who, earlier this year, saw commentary on the broadcast of the conviction from Old Bailey in a legal history first.
Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan attended the awards ceremony, which brought together over two hundred journalists from all sectors of the UK media industry.
The awards, presented through ITV News’ Lucrezia Millarini, were organised in partnership with WeShop and Camelot, Google News Initiative and Newsworks.
